Here’s another character from my comic, he stars in the first issue. His name, which you have to say in full, A Pimp Named Superfly. As you can see I love the “Boondocks”. I don’t want to give too much away, so I’ll just say it was fun writing him. What I can tell you is that Superfly is who Diana will be fighting in the first issue. He’s the comic first villain, so I wanted something memorable but simple. What better than a pimp. They’re well dressed and anyone with a decent understanding of how pimping actually works, knows pimps are evil as hell. Hopefully I make clear in the story, despite their fashion sense and their smooth talking speech, they are bad people, doing bad things. You guys should enjoy Diana beating the piss out of him.

I didn’t have a specific image in mind when designing him, I looked up Black pimp fashion. I tried to stay in the 1970’s, to me that where Black pimp fashion peaked, but also I just really like how Black people dressed then. When I think of pimps, I think large and exaggerated. I gave him a shirt with a big collar, big hat, a huge mink coat, and some big glasses. When I think of someone well dressed, I think they would have a lot of accessories and not just the clothes on their back. Originally he didn’t have glasses, but I think it added something and I thought giving him bad eyesight would be interesting. It’s something small, but I think it adds a layer to him. He’s a little vulnerable like the rest of us. For his hair, I’m not exactly sure what to call it but Suga Free, a know pimp/rapper, had that hair style in his “On My Way” music video. I love the natural hair of Black people, but I just love how there’s just so many ways to style it. I also think of old Motown singers and they way they had their hair, but I feel like it’s a little different. Also with a style like this, you can tell Superfly spends a lot of time on his hair and more importantly his appearance. As someone with waves, it takes a lot time to style hair that fine. I gave him a cane too, but I don’t have to explain that, pimp canes are just cool.
